Chilled water installation built with press fittings

Projects

Home/Projects

Selected projects carried out by SKiC teams: inspections of chillers in continuous operation, rooftop service, refrigerant decisions under the F-gas regulation, compressed air cooling and controls upgrades. Client names are not published; the technical scope is described as it was.

F-gas company certificate. A report with measurements after every visit. Mobile service in Poland and the EU.

Every project below started with the same step: measurements on the running unit and a review of its history. Only then did we propose a scope of work. The descriptions show what maintenance teams can expect when they bring us in, from a single inspection to a complete installation with controls and web visualisation.

Chiller inspections

Clint CHA/G 786-P in continuous operation

The chiller supplies a process that cannot be stopped for a service visit, so the inspection was planned around the load. With scroll compressors working in tandems we checked each circuit while the other carried the load: suction and discharge pressures, superheat and subcooling, compressor current on each phase, the condition of the condenser coil and fans, and the temperature difference across the evaporator. The leak check was performed according to the interval resulting from the CO2 equivalent of the charge. The maintenance team received a report with the readings and a list of items to plan for the next shutdown window.

Hiross PGN070: capacity test before a decision

The owner of an older Hiross PGN070 asked whether the unit was still worth repairing. Instead of an opinion based on age, we carried out a capacity test: water flow, supply and return temperatures, electrical input and refrigerant side readings, compared with the nominal data. The result showed how far the unit had drifted from its original performance and which components were responsible. With that, the decision between repair and replacement became a calculation, not a guess.

Refrigerants and retrofits

Carrier chiller on a phased-out HFC

Regulation (EU) 2024/573 restricts the use of high-GWP refrigerants for servicing and progressively reduces their availability. For a Carrier chiller running on such a refrigerant we prepared an assessment with three options:

  • Continued service on the existing refrigerant, with a realistic view of its price and availability and the leak check interval resulting from the charge in CO2 equivalent.
  • Retrofit to a lower-GWP refrigerant approved for the compressor type, including the effect on capacity, oil compatibility and expansion valve settings.
  • Replacement of the unit, selected together with our partner ChillerTech, see chiller selection and supply.

Each option was described with its technical risks and the work needed, so that the owner could plan the budget for the coming years.

Rooftop service

Lennox Baltic with eClimatic controller

The rooftop inspection covered the refrigerant circuits, the heating section, the economiser dampers and actuators, filters, belts and the eClimatic controller with its sensors. On rooftops, faults are often not in the refrigerant circuit but in the air path: a stuck damper or a drifting mixed air sensor can make a unit cool with outside air in summer or run compressors when free cooling is available. The report listed the readings for each circuit and the settings that we corrected.

Installations with controls

Compressed air cooling with free cooling

For a compressed air application we built a cooling system around an Omega Air ACW 1400F SS stainless steel heat exchanger. The heat is rejected by a chiller and, in the cold season, by a dry cooler working in free cooling mode, which takes over the load when the outdoor temperature allows it and reduces the operating hours of the compressors. The system runs under our own control with web visualisation, so the maintenance team can see temperatures, operating modes and alarms remotely.

PM-LUFT 20 air handling unit with web visualisation

An existing PM-LUFT 20 AHU received web visualisation: supply and extract temperatures, fan status, heating and cooling valve positions and alarms are available in a browser. This is the type of upgrade described on the controls and remote monitoring page.

Special applications

Carrier 69NT40 containers as a cold store

Refrigerated containers with Carrier 69NT40 units are sometimes used as a stationary cold store. They were designed for transport, so on a fixed site they need the same care as any other refrigeration plant: controller diagnostics, condenser cleaning, leak checks and repairs of fans and sensors. More on this on the refrigerated container service page.

Questions from maintenance teams

Can you inspect a chiller without stopping production?

In most cases yes, if the unit has more than one compressor or circuit. We plan the inspection around the load and agree any short stops in advance.

Why do you not publish client names?

Many of our clients do not want their plant details made public. We describe the technical scope only.

Do you design and build complete systems?

Yes, including pipework in steel, stainless steel and press fittings, controls with Siemens PLC and web visualisation.

Can you assess whether to retrofit or replace a unit?

Yes. We base the assessment on measurements, refrigerant rules and the cost of each option, and give it to you in writing.

Have a similar project?

Describe your equipment and what you need, and we will propose a scope based on measurements.
